Barley is Scotland’s most important and valuable crop mainly used for beverages such as whisky and beer, but also as animal feed. However, in some parts of the world it is part of staple diets and used as a snack. Could Scotland benefit from adding value to barley for the human diet?

Barley production in Scotland

Barley is the fourth most important cereal crop in the world, grown in more than 100 countries and accounting for around 150 million tonnes of barley per annum. Barley is primarily used for animal feed, human food and the production of alcohol.
