Salmon has become Scotland’s biggest food exports with an estimated value of £600m in 2017, driven by the EU, US and China. The Scottish Government aims to grow the salmon farming industry up to 210,000 tonnes by 2020, and 300,000 – 400,000 tonnes by 2030.

An ambitious goal that faces important environmental and sustainable challenges in near future. Researchers and food manufacturers increasingly invest in new technologies to improve productivity of salmon farming in an efficient and sustainable manner, increasingly incorporating artificial intelligence.

Many modern fish farms already use video cameras to monitor their fish stock. But new computer technologies show ways of improving this further, especially feeding and health systems of fish farms efficiently.
