Ben Lomond Gin has unveiled a limited-edition gin as the first release in its Explorer Series, launched to support the conservation, protection, and restoration of the UK’s wild places.
Created in homage to the brand’s adventurous spirit and its commitment to unconventional serves, The Explorer Series is set to be a collection of versatile gins that will be distilled using a unique selection of foraged botanicals found in some of the UK’s best wild places, protected by leading conservation charity the John Muir Trust.
The partnership between Ben Lomond Gin and the John Muir Trust was developed through shared values of adventure, knowledge, and exploration. Founded in 1983, the Trust is inspired by the life and works of John Muir (1838-1914), the Scots-born founding father of modern conservation and the inspiration behind national parks.
A true embodiment of adventurous spirit, John Muir was a prominent advocate of the beauty of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs, leading the way for Ben Lomond Gin to take its inspiration from the ‘Beacon Mountain’, the colours of the flowering heather on the hills, and the wild Scottish berries found within the rich woodlands.
The Schiehallion is the first limited-edition gin in the Explorer Series, with each expression taking inspiration from some of UK’s best wild places, telling their stories and capturing their flavours with a direct contribution to preserve and protect them.
Inspired by the rich botanical life of the Perthshire area, The Schiehallion balances the sweetness of blaeberries and birch leaves with the aromatic notes of wild thyme. With subtle undertones of berries and herbal spices, the result is a superbly versatile gin that offers a unique combination of sweet, spicy, crisp and floral.
John Grieveson, Chief Marketing Officer of Ben Lomond Gin owner Loch Lomond Group, said: “Ben Lomond Gin was inspired by the natural beauty of Ben Lomond and Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, which exists today due to the effort of ‘father of national parks’ John Muir. We’re delighted to launch our Explorer Series in collaboration with the Trust established in his name.
“It’s truly been a collaborative project from the start, and we worked closely with the John Muir Trust botanists to create The Schiehallion; the perfect balance of sweet and crisp botanicals inspired by the legends of The Fairy Hill of the Caledonians.
“We’re proud that a direct contribution from every purchase of The Schiehallion will help fund the John Muir Trust’s Wild Woods Appeal, dedicated to expanding and restoring native woodlands across the wild places in its care.”
Tom Corke, John Muir Trust East Schiehallion Manager, said: “Five thousand years ago, as much as 60 per cent of the UK was covered with trees but centuries of loss caused by human and animal impact, the spread of invasive species, and climate change means that today, native woodland covers just four per cent of the country.
“Woodlands play an essential role in providing clean air, carbon storage and soil retention, as well as providing important habits for many threatened species. As such, our Wild Woods Appeal is putting a spotlight on native restoration, starting with planting 50,000 trees on Skye and Knoydart. This will include Scots pine, birch and rowan – an essential botanical of Ben Lomond Gin.
“Ben Lomond Gin’s support will help plant, protect and expand these essential ecosystems across the wild places in our care. This partnership will provide valuable funds for the Trust’s work, while raising awareness of this vital cause.”
Ben Lomond Gin launched in 2019 and has since established a reputation as one of Scotland’s most exciting gins, renowned for its bold and versatile flavour profiles.
Ben Lomond Schiehallion Gin is bottled at 43% ABV and has an RRP of £50.00. Each edition of the Explorer Series will be limited to just 1,000 bottles making it one of the rarest collections of gin released by Ben Lomond Gin.
This limited-edition gin giftset comes beautifully packaged in the new Explorer Series branding and includes two Ben Lomond Gin glasses, the perfect size for a gin and tonic or a cocktail, making it the ideal gift for gin lovers this Christmas.
