The expo is co-hosted by the Ministry of Commerce of China and the Shanghai Municipal Government. Its partners include World Trade OrganizationUnited Nations Conference on Trade and Development and United Nations Industrial Development Organization.

The primary aim of CIIE is to support trade liberalization and economic globalization, actively opening the Chinese market to the world. It provides a platform for foreign enterprises to showcase their products and services, enhance trade and investment, and foster economic cooperation.

Glasgow Chamber of Commerce Presence in China

In 2019, GCoC first took a delegation of Scottish businesses to Shanghai also visiting Hangzhou on an exploratory trip. This resulted in MOUs being signed with British Chambers of Commerce Shanghai, as well as Zhejiang Science and Technology Exchange and Talent Service Centre, as well as with a number of other organisations.

Glasgow Chamber of Commerce has since secured the services of Xiang Li, as official representative of GCoC in China to support with ongoing engagement in the region. Through this relationship an official partnership with Orient International Enterprise, a large State-Owned distributor and importer based in Shanghai, has been established.

The relationship with Orient International Enterprise evolved positively, resulting in Orient International Enterprise supporting the GCoC in establishing a dedicated GCoC stand at the 2023 CIIE, offering the Chamber and members the opportunity to showcase, in a dedicated location, their products and services to the hundreds of thousands of attendees at CIIE. GCoC and Orient International now have an official Memorandum of Understanding Agreement which further solidifies this engagement.

The 2023 visit resulted in a number of successful case studies, seeing significant volumes of products being exported to China as a result of this mission, highlighting the success of this relationship.

Currently the greatest interest from China, and Orient International Enterprise, in Scottish companies is in the food and drink sector, Scotch whisky specifically.

Beyond CIIE – GCoC’s Scotland China Project

Given the success of the 2023 mission and GCoC’s relationship with Xiang Li in market, GCoC has now established an ongoing sales support offering for the Chinese market. This is an opportunity to join a group of Scottish companies seeking to export products to China.

GCoC and Xiang Li will support the expansion of your product range to China on an ongoing basis with a focus on generating leads from CIIE. There will be a commercial arrangement agreed with each company in advance of joining the project.
