Pods for Purpose
Pods for Purpose is proving that a cup of coffee can do more than caffeinate; it can create social impact. Founded on the belief that everyday products can be built around purpose rather than just profit, the Community Interest Company blends over a decade of coffee industry experience with a mission to support communities across Scotland, and is now launching its wholesale offering this September.
In this Q&A, the founder shares the story behind Pods for Purpose, what "coffee with purpose" really means, and why Scottish partnerships sit at the heart of it all.
Scottish Food & Drink September
Thinking back to when you first started Pods for Purpose, was there a person, place, or memory that planted the idea for what you do now?
Pods for Purpose began with a simple belief: everyday products can create social impact when they are built around purpose, not just profit. The idea came from over 10 years working in the coffee industry, from running cafés, roasting and sourcing great coffees, to making more flat whites than I care to count. During that time, I also helped set up a social enterprise focused on supporting its local community and the businesses around it. That stayed with me. After plenty of late nights thinking it over, I wanted to bring those two worlds together, great coffee and real support for local organisations.
What does “coffee with purpose” mean in practice, and how does that shape the way you run the business?
For me, “coffee with purpose” means making choices that go beyond your morning brew. It means offering a quality product that customers can enjoy, while ensuring the business has a positive impact through the way it operates, the partnerships it builds and the causes it supports. As a Community Interest Company, purpose is built into our model: commercial success allows us to create more impact across Scotland. It shapes how we think about growth, from the suppliers we work with to our wholesale relationships and our customers. We want every box of Pods to be a small but tangible way for people and businesses to support something bigger.
Why was it important to work with suppliers and partners across Scotland, and what role do they play in the Pods for Purpose story?
Working with suppliers and partners across Scotland is important because it helps keep our story connected to the communities we want to help. Scottish businesses bring knowledge, creativity and a shared commitment to quality, and those relationships are central to how we grow responsibly. We believe collaboration creates stronger outcomes for businesses, customers and communities and being part of a network of Scottish producers, retailers, hospitality businesses and purpose-led organisations gives us the opportunity to make a wider impact together. Our partners are not simply part of the supply chain, they are part of the Pods for Purpose story.
What does ‘Scottish food and drink’ mean to you, beyond geography?
To us, Scottish food and drink represent provenance, resilience and innovation. It is about people taking real care over what they make, often with a strong connection to their local communities and the environment around them. Scotland has a reputation for quality, but it is also home to businesses that are constantly finding new ways to do things better, whether that means improving sustainability, creating distinctive products or building businesses with social value at their heart. That combination of forward thinking is what makes the sector so exciting to be part of.
Looking ahead, what would success look like for Pods for Purpose over the next few years, and what impact do you hope the business will have?
Success for Pods for Purpose would mean becoming a recognised, trusted coffee supplier for consumers and businesses that want their purchasing decisions to have a positive impact. We want to continue growing our wholesale and retail partnerships, reach more customers across Scotland and beyond, and increase the amount we can put back into communities and great causes. Ultimately, we hope to prove that a coffee business can deliver excellent quality, build sustainable commercial relationships and create social value at the same time. If more people see purpose-led purchasing as an easy, everyday choice, that would be a real achievement for us.
