Jimmy Buchan, a respected leader and lifelong advocate for the UK seafood sector, has been formally admitted to the “Freedom of the City of London”, following his recent admittance as a Liveryman in the Worshipful Company of Fishmongers. This prestigious honour recognises Jimmy’s decades of dedication to the seafood industry, from his early days at sea to his leadership in shaping the future of the supply chain.
The ceremony took place at London’s historic Guildhall, where Jimmy was proudly accompanied by his family, including his two daughters, who travelled to witness the occasion.
Jimmy became a Liveryman in March 2025, and his admittance to the Freedom of the City marks a significant milestone in a career defined by service, innovation, and passion for the seafood trade.
From his beginnings as a fisherman and skipper, Jimmy has spent a lifetime immersed in the seafood sector. He later transitioned into the supply chain, where his expertise and advocacy have helped elevate standards and promote sustainability. For the past eight years, Jimmy has served as Chief Executive Officer of the Scottish Seafood Association, representing processors and suppliers across Scotland and championing the journey of seafood from sea to plate.
“Being admitted to the Freedom of the City of London is a deeply humbling experience,” said Jimmy Buchan. “It’s a recognition not just of my own journey, but of the incredible people across the seafood sector who work tirelessly to bring our world-class produce to market. I’m proud to represent them and to continue advocating for the future of our industry.”
The Worshipful Company of Fishmongers, one of the oldest Livery Companies in the City of London, has supported the fishing industry for centuries. Admission as a Liverman and the granting of the Freedom of the City are among the highest honours in the trade, reserved for individuals who have made outstanding contributions to their field.
Jimmy Buchan’s legacy as a true ambassador for the seafood supply chain continues to inspire, bridging tradition and innovation in one of the UK’s most vital industries.
