Sonas Collection is proud to announce the launch of 1635, Scotland’s newest fine dining destination, located at the recently renovated Knipoch House Hotel, near Oban, Scotland.
Under the creative leadership Chef Andrew Engledow, 1635 offers a seven-course, high-end Scottish dining experience, blending the finest local ingredients with seasonal flavours from across the country.
The restaurant’s name pays homage to the historic roots of the Knipoch House Hotel, which dates back to the 16th century. The name ‘Knipoch’ is derived from the Norse for ‘hilly place,’ a reminder of the Viking influence in the area. A plaque mounted on the wall, embossed with a crest emblem and the year 1635, was originally located on the front of the house for tax collection purposes, further highlighting the hotel’s rich history.
Chef Engledow joined Knipoch House Hotel from Duisdale House Hotel in Skye, bringing his expertise in local sourcing and innovative cuisine. The ‘Taste of Scotland’ menu is a tribute to the nation’s diverse culinary heritage. Featuring Shetland scallops, Argyll venison, Orkney halibut, and Tain cheddar, the menu showcases the very best of Scotland’s land and sea.
Legends tell of Robert the Bruce battling in the nearby hills, while the ancient Road of the Kings, used by Scottish monarchs journeying to their final resting place on Iona, passes close by. The hotel also bears the mark of one of the darker moments, the notorious 1591 murder that later inspired Shakespeare’s Macbeth. The tale of betrayal and intrigue, involving feuding members of Clan Campbell, remains etched in the stones of Knipoch, offering a rich historical setting for a contemporary culinary experience.

Knipoch House Hotel became part of the Sonas Collection in early 2024 following a £1 million renovation. The hotel has been carefully restored to preserve its original charm, featuring stone walls, fireplaces and wood-panelled interiors, while enhancing the guest experience with modern comforts such as super king-sized beds, luxury fittings and a relaxing hot tub. Set against the backdrop of Loch Feochan, the hotel offers a peaceful retreat for guests with stunning views from its Loch View Terrace.
The Sonas Collection, founded on the Isle of Skye by Anne Gracie-Gunn and her late husband Ken, was born from a shared love of sailing the Hebridean waters and Gaelic culture. More than 20 years later, Anne continues to lead the family-run group, providing guests with an unforgettable experience of authentic Highland hospitality.
