Supermarket own brands swept the board in the non-alcoholic spirit category at the People’s Choice Awards in Manchester. Aldi’s Greyson’s 0% Pink Berries scooped the prized gold, with Asda’s Extra Special Nin-Alcoholic Rhubarb & Ginger securing the silver ahead of the other two finalists and triumphing over all the big brand names in the competition. Both products were developed and are produced by Scottish non-alcoholic beverage company Spirits of Virtue.

Aldi’s Greyson’s 0% Pink Berries retails at just £8.99, proving that consumers can purchase top-quality non-alcoholic drinks at value-for-money prices. Developed on a base of unique, naturally filtered Cairngorm Mountain mineral water, it’s a complex blend of alpine juniper, Indian coriander, cardamom, orris root, and angelica, layered with natural flavours of English strawberries and Scottish raspberries, with a hint of lavender and pink peppercorn.

Asda’s Extra Special Rhubarb & Ginger is one of a range of non-alcoholic spirit own brands and retails at a similarly affordable £10.00. The product, which has already won numerous awards, is also based on the unique Cairngorm Mountain water, with natural flavours of rhubarb and Nigerian ginger added to the juniper- and coriander-led botanical base.

Roddy Nicoll, CEO & Founder of Spirits of Virtue, commented: “To win the top two awards at People’s Choice - judged, in large part, by consumers who are the ones buying the products - is phenomenal. It proves beyond a doubt that we produce some of the very best drinks in the category and that top-quality non-alcoholic spirits can be affordable and available to everyone.”

Both products were developed to specific briefs by the retailers. Spirits of Virtue was founded by brothers Roddy and Kerr Nicoll six years ago when they recognised the opportunity in the then-emerging no/lo sector. They work with drinks industry expert Angela Mount, who heads up their Product Development department.

Angela Mount, Product Development Director, added: “I’m absolutely delighted with these results. We worked closely with the buyers to meet their specific briefs, creating the highest quality possible for the style desired. It’s all about showcasing flavours, creating authenticity of style, and ensuring purity of flavours, to offer an enjoyable non-alcoholic alternative to spirits.”
